Pontiacs take down Rival Bobcats 4-0

Bonnyville traveled to Lloydminister on Wednesday evening to face their Alberta Jr Hockey League rivals, the Bobcats. Bus legs didn’t affect the boys who hit the rink fresh and fast. Head Coach of the Pontiacs, Rick Swan says the team really came together and a lot of things went right for the club midweek in the Border City.

“We always tell our guys, there should be no stone un-turned. We’re prepared for anything, any team can throw at us,” the coach says it’s really bringing the fundamentals learned in practice to the game, “so that they’ve already seen it before, because we’ve done it; over and over. We did that, we brought our practice to the game and we played the right way.”

After a scoreless first period, the Pontiacs were able to get past Bobcats’ goalie, Austin McGrath in the second.  Tyler Podgorenko put one in at 8:08 from Erik Donald and Brendan HolterhusDerek Brown followed that up with a true beaut, an unassisted shorthanded goal at 14:05 to give the travelling fans a reason to ring those cowbells.

The third period was all about this trio:  Brandon WhistleMitchell Oliver and Gen Bryshun. The threesome helped each other out early in the final 20 to get two goals. Whistle would record the Gs while, Oliver and Bryshun took home a pair of apples each for mom; closing the game 4-0 for the Yaks.

“If you play the right way, you’re going to get rewarded often,” Coach Swan says the synchronicity on the ice was a true example of how the team can play when at its best. “We stuck with it. I thought Lloydminister worked hard, they’re a good, young team and they forced us to earn our two points.”
