DMSCC to Host First Event in Bonnyville – Walk a Mile in Her Shoes
Bonnyville’s inaugural Walk a Mile in Her Shoes to be held on Feb 26th
On February 26, 2017 with the support of the Bonnyville Pontiac’s, the Dr. Margaret Savage Crisis Centre (DMSCC) will be hosting their first event in Bonnyville. ‘Walk A Mile in Her Shoes’ is an International men’s march to show solidarity against domestic violence.
In March of 2016 the Bonnyville Community Support Program was launched and in the first six months, 38 files were opened. To date, our Community Support Workers have helped over 53 clients through one on one supports and referrals. They have also set up community information booths and built relationships with various agencies in the area.
There are many benefits offered by this program which include group sessions for both men and women, programs for youth detailing the importance of healthy relationships and educational presentations throughout the community.
“We knew there was a need for this service in the Bonnyville area,” said Susan White, Director of the DMSCC. “But once the numbers started coming in and the program was more established, the need became more evident.”
The ‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ will be taking place during the Pontiac’s hockey game on Feb 26 at 2:00 pm. Many local men will be walking around in the signature red high heels to raise funds and awareness for the work that the DMSCC does everyday, and will also promote the importance of our Bonnyville Community Support Program, which will soon enter its second year of operation.
To register for the event or for more information please call the Bonnyville Community Support office at 780-826-2656 or email bonnyvilleoutreach@dmscc.ca.
