SPERD to attend Rural School Boards Caucus
SPERD has been approached by Buffalo Trails Public Schools to determine interest in a rural school boards caucus that would take to the provincial government any issues unique to rural divisions. Trustees Rhonda Lafrance and Deb Pederson said they would be willing to participate in meetings.
Topics to be discussed may include transportation, declining enrollments, and less access to professional services for students’ needs than in urban areas. Starosielski notes, “There is always strength in numbers. We just have to see how a caucus will look and its structure.”
The idea is for Rural School Boards Caucus to start meetings early in the new year. The caucus will discuss important issues specific to rural schools, then come up with a game plan on how to approach the government, or other powers that be, with the issues and action plans.
