Proposed Site for new Bulk Water Station in Elk Point Determined
The Town of Elk Point heard a presentation from Urban Systems Ltd, senior project manager, Keith Fransson, at Tuesday’s regular Council Meeting regarding the planned new bulk water station. Urban Systems was asked to analyze and present some potential ideal locations for a new bulk water station. Councillor for the Town of Elk Point, Lorne Young, says that on Fransson’s recommendation a potential location has been determined.
“They’ve done a ton of work for us, looking at the town’s water system. We needed to have a clear picture of our water systems, to know where to put the truck bulk water fill,” Councillor Young says that Fransson presented the complete analysis for Council, with five potential locations for Council to choose from. “We’ve chosen one, with a possible back-up for a second one.”
The back-up is to ensure that if the first options isn’t approved by the Province, than the Town can continue forward without much down time. “The site that we chose, we need to get Alberta Transportation approval,” Councillor Young says the Town doesn’t anticipate a problem with the location. Should Alberta Transportation approve of the location, then they will conduct the engineering, followed by the build of the station.
The proposed location of the new bulk water station is on the northeast end of town, near the new Co-op cardlock gas bar and the RV dump site. The proposed location met all of the Town’s criteria, explains Young, “we wanted to make sure there was sufficient water flow there; which there is. And we wanted to make sure there was easy access for trucks getting on and off the highway. We also wanted to make sure that it was visible; because this is a bit of a business for our town.”
There is a bulk water station near the public works shop; however the station is aging, it’s slower and can be tough to maneuver larger trucks.
