Council Approves Liquor Sales at Jr B Canadiens Games

After some debate and a successful test run at the World Jr A Challenge (WJAC) exhibition game last week, Council for the Town of St Paul has approved the sale of liquor at Jr B Canadiens games. The Jr B organization says it’ll use the liquor sales as a fundraiser for the team, who are hosting provincials this season.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Town of St Paul, Holly Habiak advised Council at Monday’s regular meeting of some stipulations other communities have, “they advised that whichever community organization, that is hosting the liquor sales, apply for a liquor licence on their own,” rather than have the Town apply for the licence and Jr B’s sell under the Town’s licence. This will help with liability issues, explained the CAO.

Having solved the liability issue, the Town’s other concern was whether liquor sales who hinder the general ‘family’ atmosphere at the games. Habiak assured Council that the liquor sales during the WJAC game did nothing to ruin the experience, “we had no issue, at all.”

The Town was also concerned about the extra clean up; which didn’t appear to be an issue, said Habiak, who added that the Jr Bs would be responsible for the clean up; along with some other Town guidelines.

Ultimately, the motion was made and approve, unanimously, that the Town of St Paul will allow the St Paul Jr B Canadiens to apply for a liquor licence, to serve and sell liquor during the 2016-17 hockey season at the Clancy Richard Arena; under the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission guidelines and under the Town of St. Paul guidelines.

The Town of St Paul Administration will go over the Town’s specific guidelines with the Jr B Canadiens at a separate meeting. Some of those requirements will include that the Jr B’s provide the manpower to sell liquor and that the sellers have the appropriate Proserve tickets.

It is unknown how long it will take to secure a liquor licence and whether or not there will be liquor sold at the home games this Friday and Saturday.
