The program gives parents real and practical advice to help prevent and deter drug use in tweens & teens

The next Kids & Drugs information session will be held a week from today, November 29th at English Bay Community Hall at Cold Lake First Nations. Dave Zimmerman, with Victim Services in Cold Lake says the program offers parents great tools to help combat and stop drug use in kids.

“We’re really excited, this is going to be our third session,” the info nights have been presented to Elizabeth Metis Settlement and at the Dene Wellness Centre at Cold Lake First Nations to rave reviews. “We’re there to help parents and grandparents,” Zimmerman says following the presentation is a question and answer period, where he makes sure that all questions are answered. “We’re giving the necessary skills and encouragement to parents for them to talk to their kids about drugs.”

Victim Services partners with the Cold Lake RCMP Detachment to present the session based on a format designed by Alberta Health Services. “The RCMP portion is very popular,” says Zimmerman, “we talk about the drugs that are potentially in our area, what they look like, and what parents should look out for; that’s huge.” There is even a large display board that shows the different types of drugs, and exactly what they look like.

The session is free to attend and supper is provided from 5:30-8:30 pm. Following the English Bay session, the next info night will be held in Ardmore, tentatively booked for January 24th. There will be additional nights booked in the city of Cold Lake, and other areas the Cold Lake RCMP Detachment serves.
