Splitting Ice
Cold Lake Ice win one – lose one on the weekend
Head Coach of the Cold Lake Ice, Scott Hood, says one of the main messages he’s sending the team following the weekend is “to stay disciplined.” The Jr B Ice won a home game on Friday versus the Onion Lake Border Chiefs, only to fall short on Saturday against the Vermilion Tigers.
Onion Lake Friday
The Ice opened scoring at Imperial Oil Place on Friday with a goal at 6:46 in the first from Brody Rosychuk; assist going to Jean-Guy Boisvert. Onion Lake was quick to respond at 12:51 with a goal from Tobie Opikokew, who then spent enough time in the box for a kneeing penalty to allow the Ice to grab the go-ahead goal, unassisted from Guillaume St-Gelias, before the close of the period.
The second period saw one goal, eight minutes of penalties and three game misconducts. Curtis Gullackson with the goal for the Ice to make it a 3-1 lead. While Brody Rosychuk and Chase Brown both received 10 minute misconducts, along with Onion Lake’s Raylon Vincent.
In the third, Boisvert with the help of Tristan Kean and Gullackson and Darian Hartley with an assist to Curtis Witney advanced the Ice to a 5-1 game, before the Border Chiefs responded with a goal from Drake Teer. Chase Brown and Jason Hamilton got the final point on the board closing the game 6-2 for the Ice.
Vermilion Saturday
“We lost our focus,” Coach Hood said the game in Vermilion started out just right, up 2-0 heading into the third. But games change quick in the Junior B, “we may be up on them in the standings; but their not going to roll over and die – and they didn’t. [The Tigers] came back and beat us.”
Curtis Gullackson and Coltan Buchta got the Ice off to a great start at the Stadium in Vermilion. But a penalty ridden and scoreless second period threw the team’s momentum off to the side. The Tigers gained in the third by taking advantage of some heat coming off a pair of scuffles. Evan Bardoel closed the gap, while Carter Myhovich got the tying goal with 30 seconds left on the clock.
After two scoreless battles of extra time, the game went to a shootout. Lucas Dennill bested goalie Dahlin Supernault for the Ice to win the game for the Tigers.
“It was an eye opener and a lesson for us,” Coach Hood says the squad will be focusing on discipline and cleaning up their game at Tuesday Night’s practice before heading into a three game weekend.
The Ice head on the road Thursday to take on Wainwright, then they’ll have two home games Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 7 pm. WIN tickets on LCN!
