New to the league Assumption’s record is 2-5-0

The Cold Lake Assumption High School six man football team will be playing out their final league game today, at 3:30 pm, before heading into playoffs. The team is inviting all fans out to come watch what’ll surely be a fast-paced, high-scoring game, on Jackson Field.

“You have to have some athletes who are quick, who can block and can definitively tackle. Because if you miss a tackle, it’s going to be a touchdown,” Head Coach of the Assumption team, Shayne Midford, says six man football is very intense.

“There’s less players on the field, so games tend to be higher scoring and a little bit faster,” promises Midford. The coach, who’s coaching history includes working with Larry Godzuik and the Bonnyville Voyageurs, says should the club be successful on the field this afternoon they will host the first playoff game. However, if they loss they will travel for the first game.

“There’s always six people who are on the field,” Midford says it’s a six person offense and six person defense team, “all the same rules as regular football apply; other than the number of the people on the field. The width is also different, only 40 yards wide; instead of 60.” Midford says the smaller field and less players makes the game a little more difficult, “there’s a lot of space out there, when you’re only dealing with six players.”

Assumption is part of the North Division; other teams include, Jasper, Hinton, Edson, two Edmonton teams, Redwater, Breton and Buck Mountain. There are another nine teams in the South Division. The top four teams in the north and top four teams in the south head into Tier I Playoffs after this weekend. The bottom teams will play out Tier II football. Should Assumption be successful on the field today they will play out Tier I.

You can cheer on the team today. Kick-off 3:30 pm on Jackson Field.
