The Cold Lake Royals hosted the Wainwright Commandos on Saturday afternoon on Soholt field for the B-Side of the Wheatland Football League playoffs. The Royals fought hard against Wainwright’s defense to come out 14-7 over the Commandos.
Head Coach for the Royals, Kelly Johnson, says both clubs came prepared for the win, “It was a great game. Both teams fought hard!” Johnson said the Commandos defense was strong on Saturday, “Wainwright had a great defensive scheme to stop our passing game. We had to run the ball to gain, the majority of the game.”
The coach said the whole team really came together on Saturday, with a few standouts, “Aiden Harrison at fullback had another solid game for us carrying the ball. Some of that credit will go to the Offensive line also – Keith Swan, Nathan Williston, Bryton Bouvier, Chad Nolan, Alex Dombinski and Hunter Nicholson.”
With only a few seniors moving on, Coach Johnson believes next year the team will be even stronger; especially, with QB Braeden Wicht returning. “Our Quarterback Braeden Wicht again had a solid both running the ball and passing. He made some good decision today based on what he awesome and made some keys adjustments at the line of scrimmage. Lots for us to build on for next season.”
“Again our Defence played extremely well. Chris Thomas and Mark Bergquist our defensive coordinators did a great job planning for the Commando’s. Anthony Francis, Keith Swan and Liam Harrison had stand out games on the defensive line. Levi Brown made a key interception for us late in the game to help seal the win.”
Five seniors will be graduating this year, says the coach. “We would like to wish our graduating seniors the best in all their future endeavours: Thomas Kell, Conrad Billette, Bryton Bouvier, Jon Alberti and Cam Blackburn. We wish to thank them and their parents for all their hard work for the Royals Football program.”
The Royals are thankful for all the fan support, parents and volunteers who helped make the 2016 season a success.
LCN would like to thank the amazing kids for the entertaining season, Coach Kelly Johnson for the post-game reports and Chastity Roberts for her fantastic pictures all season long.
