Royal Win over Commandos 27-7
Cold Lake hosts Wainwright in special Thursday night game
Thanksgiving weekend is always a special week in the Wheatland Football League, as an opportunity for fans to enjoy Thursday night football. Such was the case at Soholt Field Thursday, when the Cold Lake High School Royals welcomed the Wainwright Commandos to the field.
“The Royals struggles in the first quarter but put up a 20-0 lead at half time,” Head Coach of the Royals, Kelly Johnson says it was a great opportunity for the team to meet Wainwright. Both clubs are considered to be in rebuilding years. From an outside perspective you’d never take the Royals for a team that’s rebuilding. They were focused and determined throughout the majority of the match and took Wainwright 27-7.
“Daniel Delorme had an amazing night of both sides of the ball,” Delorme is a regular on the highlight reel. Coach Johnson says there were many standout plays from Delorme, “on offence he had two touchdowns on great passes from quarter back Braeden Wicht. On Defence he was all over the field making plays.”
“Aiden Harrison at running back had his strongest game of the year, he seems to be finding his stride running the ball lately.” The Royals welcomed back Anthony Francis after missed last weeks game, Coach Johnson says the receiver, “was a huge threat receiving the football all night.” On Defence Levi Brown had another interception and leading the Royals in tackles was rookie linebacker Colthen Bernier, “he is becoming a very good linebacker and leader for the Royals Defence,” says the coach.
“The game was the last regular season game for the Royals. The Royals finish is third spot on the ‘A’ side of the playoffs with a record of 4-2.” Next weekend the Royals travel to St. Paul for the first round of playoffs, Friday night 4:00 pm kickoff. “Cold Lake and St Paul have a lot of history in the Wheatland Football league. For many years they where bitter rivals, often meeting in the Championship game. This year they squared off in an exhibition game in Edmonton with the Royals prevailing 7-0.” Coach Johnson says it’s all or nothing in St. Paul, “this game will mean a lot and both teams will have to bring there ‘A’ games.”
