Four way stop for the intersection of 47th Street and 48th Avenue

Town of St. Paul Council has voted to install a four-way stop at the intersection of 47th street and 48th avenue. It was brought to the attention of Council that the busy intersection was causing some concern from the school’s transportation company.

In a letter addressed to Council, Doug Fedoruk, Director of Transportation & Facilities, for St. Paul Education Regional Division (SPERD) explained that the bus company reached out to him with safety concerns regarding the intersection. Fedoruk wrote that without a four-way stop, “we feel there will be significant back up in traffic from that intersection, back east towards the school, as it is very difficult for us to make a left hand turn.”

Mayor Glenn Andersen says he can knows firsthand the traffic issues at that corner, “I live near that intersection and the hospital does impact. The health care people park there and when you’re facing west, you cannot see to the south at all. It is very busy because people are parked on both sides of the road. There’s not too much from the north, but there is an incline when you’re coming from the south and you can’t see.”

A traffic count was presented to Council, which was done on a no-school day. 136 vehicles passed through that intersection between 8:30 am and 9:00 am.

“I do agree,” Mayor Andersen says he understands the intersection is busy and can poise a safety hazard for drivers, “there needs to be proper signage there; like ‘NEW’ because people will run it.” The mayor urged that people be warned of the new signage.

Council in agreement with the mayor, voted to install a four-way stop at the intersection of 47th street and 48th avenue.
