Cold Lake RCMP Investigate Shooting at Marie Lake

61 year old man arrested & charged

On Sept. 15, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., Cold Lake RCMP received a report that two men were shot at while attending to a service call for assistance at a residence in the Village of Marie Lake. The owner of the residence was alleged to have shot at the men through his residence window while they stood at his front door and then again as the two men fled the property. No one was injured during this incident.

 

The scene was contained immediately by the Cold Lake detachment members. Further assistance was provided by the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) from Edmonton, and Police Dog Services (PDS). Several residences in the area were evacuated as a precaution for public safety.

Police were unable to establish contact with the man inside the residence despite continuous efforts over several hours. Entry into the residence was made by the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team and the man subsequently surrendered.  A search warrant was then executed by police at the residence with several loaded firearms and ammunition being seized.  The man was transported to the Cold Lake detachment and remanded into custody.

 

Irvin Poirier, a 61 year old man from Marie Lake has been charged with:

 

  • Careless use of a firearm (x2)
  • Pointing a loaded firearm (x2)
  • Discharging a firearm with intent (x2)
  • Assault with a weapon (x2)
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

 

Irvin Poirier will appear in Cold Lake Provincial Court on Sept. 28, 2016, at 10:00 a.m.

The RCMP will not provide any additional information or details in relation to this investigation as the matter is now before the courts.
