RCMP Urge Safe Driving Practices for Canada Day Weekend

Last Updated: June 30th, 2016By Tags: , ,

With Canada Day falling on a Friday this year, there is sure to be a higher volume of traffic on Alberta roads this long weekend. The Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU), which consists of RCMP Traffic Services members and Alberta Traffic Sheriffs, will be out on Alberta’s roads this weekend in an effort to apprehend motorists not obeying the law such as impaired drivers, distracted drivers and those not wearing seat belts.

We have had 102 traffic related fatalities so far in 2016. “We are continually trying to educate the public on the importance of safe driving habits. With the summer months comes higher traffic volumes on the roads and in turn higher numbers of fatalities”, said Superintendent Ian Lawson, Officer-In-Charge of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. “The fatality statistics are concerning and it should make all motorists aware of the dangers of unsafe driving habits.”

Motorists are urged to obey the posted speed limits, wear their seat belts, avoid distractions and to always have a designated driver if you are going to be enjoying some alcoholic beverages.

“On long weekends we see an increase in reckless driving behaviours” says Superintendent Rick Gardner, Alberta Traffic Sheriffs, “which is especially concerning with higher volumes of traffic. We are urging motorist to slow down and exercise patience on our roads.”

The RCMP is also urging all ATV riders to exercise caution and safety this long weekend after eight people were killed while riding off-roading equipment in Alberta since January, and a number of others were left injured.

“We realize that the beautiful weather is going to put more people on the roads – and on their ATVs this weekend. We just want to make sure everyone gets to where they’re going safely,” said Sgt. Jack Poitras. “If you plan to be your ATV this weekend, just remember to wear your helmet, drive at a reasonable speed, and don’t drink and drive.”
