As Campgrounds get busier, so do MD Public Safety Officers

The Municipal District (MD) of Bonnyville Public Safety Officers report that campgrounds have been getting busier the last few weeks, which means the officers have been busy patrol the areas. “It’s routine for this time of year,” reports Director of Public Safety, Chris Garner.

“Campgrounds are getting a little busier, after a slow start for us, at the beginning of the season. We’ve had a few incidents, nothing out of the ordinary, pretty run of the mill.” The MD of Bonnyville recently passed a bylaw to deal with mess left behind at campgrounds. This will be another element Public Safety Officers will have to be on the look out for.

MD Officers are wrapping up their school tours, says Garner, “MD resource officers are finishing up their year at the schools and concluding all their different programs that they had running this year.” One program that concluded this month was, the Right Choices Program. According to the MD’s website, The Right Choices Program was created by our school officers to fit in with the Grade 5 Health and Wellness Curriculum. This Program is offered to all Grade 5 classes and consists of 5 sessions with students and a Graduation Ceremony.

Sessions include:

  • Bullying & Harassment
  • Cyber Bullying & Internet Safety
  • Alcohol, Tobacco, & Caffeine
  • Drugs & their effects
  • Peer Pressure

“We did some assistance at the Iron River School to help with their traffic clean-up. As well, we were asked to provide some traffic control for the Ride for Dad, non-profit cancer research [fundraiser]. We had a couple traffic control points for them,” explains Garner.
