Bonnyville Singers Bring a Lil Country & a Lil Rock N Roll to the Lyle
The Bonnyville Singers Spring Concert opens tonight at the Lyle Victor Albert in Bonnyville. The choir groups, who’s compared more to Glee than a prim-and-proper-buttoned-up-choir-group, is bringing a mixture of country and rock, with a little of everything in between. The show, Lil County & Lil Rock N Roll, will feature the Boyz in Black, led by Mayor of Bonnyville, Gene Sobolewski.
“The variety of music we have, for this show, hits every age group,” says President of the Bonnyville Singers, Alicia Sinclair. “The director of our group is the mayor, so if you want to come out and see our talented mayor perform, this is your chance.” Mayor Sobolewski is known to rock the stage at Bonnyville LIVE evenings, as well as, with his band the Boyz in Black.
The choir is made up of 23 amateur singers from the Bonnyville area, says Sinclair. “We’re made up of all different singers; sopranos, basses, tenors…” Due to a lack of men a lot of the women fill in the deeper vocals, “we have very few men, so a lot of the women sing tenors.” Sinclair laughs that the show must go one and the group very quickly improvised and found females able to hit the deep vocal ranges, “three out of four of our tenors are women, it’s interesting.” For the most part the group performs as a choir of 23, says Sinclair, “we do have solos, and some people choose to do solos. We also have small groups.”
Sinclair, like many in Bonnyville, grew up watching the (what was then) The Bonnyville Society Singers. She happily recalls wanting to be a part of the magic since she was a young kid, “when I was a kid, I remember watching them sing, and thinking ‘I want to do that someday’.” Fast-forward Sinclair laughs that she’s the President of the group, “one of my friends, from out-of-town invited me to join the choir, and I just thought, ‘this is so cool. I remember having that moment at the Agriplex’.”
This is the third of the group big performances of the year, they also put on special Remembrance Day and Christmas concerts. “It’s a fun night to get out,” with the whole family. The show is all ages, and there will be wine and beer available for those of age.
Tickets are available at Telliers Guardian Drugs for $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Shows are tonight (Thursday), Friday and Saturday at 7pm.
