Cold Lake lacrosse product Frey selected in two drafts

A Cold Lake product has been a sought after young lacrosse player, being taken in not one, but two lacrosse drafts in recent weeks.

Bennett Frey was taken in the Junior A draft in the 3rd round, 12th overall to the St. Albert Miners, and then on Friday, Frey’s name was called first in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League Jr. B draft to the St. Albert Crude.

“I felt kind of pro in the moment there,” said Bennett Frey, the former Lakeland Lacrosse player upon going first overall.

“It’s awesome. I didn’t kind of really get into this whole Junior A thing, like I didn’t really know about it till last year. So it’s really awesome to hear that my name was called in the Junior A draft,” he said.

Frey has been billeting in Sherwood Park for the past couple of years in hopes of pursuing lacrosse more seriously at Vimy Ridge Academy after his Grade 8 year in Cold Lake.

“Honestly I felt really confident in the sport,” he said.

“Kind of just watching my older brother [Jaydon] play just pushed me to be a little bit better than he was. We were kind of competitive up until a couple years ago, and then he unfortunately stopped playing. And so he just cheers me on now. It’s pretty awesome to have your older brother cheer you on.”

Frey describes his game as a playmaker through the transition game from offence to defence. He hopes after starting to return to play last summer, he can move into Junior in this upcoming spring and summer.

“When COVID started obviously, there was no sports right. But in the summer, we had the North Playdowns, so that was pretty awesome to get back on the floor. I was affiliating for Junior B. That’s kind of like where I got all my looks from and so every team could see me, and then during the winter here we had a 4-on-4 league,” said Frey.

“Hopefully I can play Junior A next year. It kind of depends on what the coaches think about me and how I play in this Junior B season. But yeah, I’d like to go play Junior A next year.”

To close out the interview, Frey was asked who he wants to thank for helping him get to this point.

“Obviously my parents, they’ve worked really hard to get me here. Mike Groves from Lakeland Lacrosse, he helped me a lot growing up with lacrosse. And my billet family. They’ve just helped me out with driving me places and everything like that.”
