Extension of temporary closure of Elk Point Emergency Department

Last Updated: October 5th, 2021By

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has announced that the Elk Point Healthcare Centre Emergency Department (ED) will be temporarily without on-site physician coverage from 8 a.m. to 8 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, as a result of not having a physician on site.

This is a temporary measure and will be in effect until October 31, or until on-site physician coverage for those hours can be secured.

“We will keep the community updated as physician recruitment efforts continue and more information becomes available,” AHS stated. “AHS is working hard to ensure local residents continue to have access to the care they need during this time.”

According to AHS, “Nursing staff will remain on-site in the ED providing triage and assessments, and referrals for patients to alternate EDs in surrounding communities as needed.”

Patients are asked to call 911 if they have a medical emergency. EMS calls will be re-routed to St. Therese – St. Paul Healthcare Centre in St. Paul (35 km).

Depending on their needs, patients seeking care at the ED in Elk Point may also be made aware of services available through local pharmacies. Residents are reminded to call Health Link at 811, which is available 24/7 for non-emergency health-related questions.

“We are thankful for the support of surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff and would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding during this time,” AHS concluded.
